Pinto Beans
Origin: Idaho. Embark on a flavorful journey with Pinto beans, renowned for their full-bodied, earthy taste. Adorned in beige-pink hues with reddish-brown splashes resembling painted canvases, these beans transform into a beautiful pink color when cooked, transcending their name "pinto," meaning "painted" in Spanish.
Pinto beans are not just a culinary delight; they also boast numerous nutritional benefits. They are an excellent source of molybdenum, a very good source of folate, and a good source of protein, vitamin B1, and vitamin B6. Additionally, they provide essential minerals such as copper, phosphorus, iron, magnesium, manganese, and potassium.
Originally hailing from Central Mexico but beloved throughout the American Southwest, Pinto beans are a versatile ingredient that pairs wonderfully with chili powder seasoning. Utilize leftovers to create delicious and hearty refried beans, adding a touch of culinary magic to your meals.
Cooking Directions: Rinse and sort through beans; soak overnight in cold water. Drain and cover with water by 4 inches. Add kombu seaweed if desired (optional; helps with digestibility). Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to simmer and begin checking for softness at 15-20 minutes.
