Star Anise
Origin: Kerala.
Star anise, named for its star-shaped appearance, features a brown hue and holds a distinctive place among major spices. With an average of eight points, each containing a single pea-sized seed, both the seeds and the pod contribute a sweet, potent anise flavor to culinary dishes. Apart from its culinary applications, star anise is valued for its medicinal benefits.
This spice enhances the flavor of dishes like Biryani and masala tea. Harvested before full ripening, the star anise pod is dried in the sun, taking on a deep brown color. Its unique and sweet flavor comes from anethol, making it suitable for use in jams, syrups, and puddings.
